Richard N Zare，国际著名物理化学，分析化学家，美国斯坦福大学化学系系主任。1976
年，以37岁的年龄当选美国科学院院士和美国艺术与科学院（AAAS）院士。 2004年，当选
中国科学院外籍院士，欧洲科学院，瑞典皇家学院，英国皇家学会等科学院院士。2009年
，当选发展中国家科学院（第三世界科学院）通讯院士。2011年，被授予中科院爱因斯坦
讲座教授，日本分析化学会荣誉会员。Zare教授已在Science, Nature, PNAS, JACS, Ang
ew. Chem.，Phys. Review Letts.等杂志发表论文850篇。
Zare教授以他在激光化学方面的研究而闻名世界，通过实验和理论研究，他对探究分子间
的碰撞过程做出了极大的贡献，并在分析化学方面解决了诸多难题。他在激光诱导荧光以
研究反应动力学方面的成果已在其他实验室被广泛采用。
对于一名科学家来说，一百次的实验往往只有一次会成功。在他科研的道路上，有坎坷，
有失败，有挫折，他又是怎么去面对这些失败的？他对失败的定义又是什么？对于当今的
青年一代，在他们面对困难与挫折的时候，他又有哪些寄语和建议？

Prof. Richard N. Zare，who is the chair of the department of chemistry in Stan
ford University, and member of U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He is als
o the internationally renowned physical chemistry, analytical chemists. In 197
6, Prof. Richard N. Zare was elected as Fellow of the Academy of Sciences of t
he United States and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) in his 3
7.In 2004, he was elected as Foreign Members of CAS , European Academy of Scie
nces, The Royal Swedish Academy, Royal Society and Academy of Sciences.In 2009
, he was elected as TWAS (Third World Academy of Sciences), Corresponding Memb
er. In 2011, he was awarded Einstein Chair Professor by Chinese Academy of Sci
ences, Honorary Member of Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry.Professor Zar
e has given named lectures at numerous universities, and has authored and co-a
uthored over 800 publications and more than 50 patents. He has published four
books.
Professor Zare is renowned for his research in the area of laser chemistry, re
sulting in a greater understanding of chemical reactions at the molecular leve
l. He has made seminal contributions to our knowledge of molecular collision p
rocesses and through experimental and theoretical researches. He has also made
significant contributions in chemical analysis. His researches in laser induc
ed fluorescence as a method for studying reaction dynamics has been widely ado
pted in other laboratories.
To be a scientist，there may be only one success in one hundred experiments. H
ow does he overcome the failures？What is the definition failure for him？The
younger generations now are easily stroke down by failures. As a scientist who
has already gone through it all, what would he say to them?
