I am looking for highly motivated postdocs and students with a background in P
hysics or Engineering to join my ultrafast nanoscale optoelectronics group in
Howard P. Isermann Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Rensse
laer Polytechnic Institute starting from the fall of 2015.
The candidates for the postdoc positions are preferred to have a strong backgr
ound in optical spectroscopy, especially with expertise on femto-second laser.
Experience with 2-dimensional materials (such as graphene, MoS2, etc.) or dev
ice fabrication will be a plus but not necessary. The candidates should have a
Ph.D. degree in Physics or Engineering before he/she starts working at RPI.
The interested students should apply to the graduate program (http://admissions.rpi.edu/graduate/admission/index.html
) of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, or the Department
of Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Ins
titute before the deadline, which is January 1st, 2015. I am interested in stu
dents majored in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, with a focus on Optica
l Spectroscopy, Optoelectronics or Material Physics. I also welcome students m
ajored in Engineering to apply, especially the ones with some experience on la
sers, optoelectronic devices or materials growth. The interested applicants ca
n mention my name in your application and are also welcome to contact me via:
sufeishi@berkeley.edu.
My research is focused on the investigation and manipulation of electron-photo
n interactions in structures and devices based on two-dimensional materials, a
nd includes both fundamental study on physics and practical implementation of
novel electronic and optoelectronic devices. More specially, my research inclu
des: 1) Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) growth of 2D materials and their relat
ed heterostructures 2) Fabrication of electronic and optoelectronic devices ba
sed on 2D materials and other quantum materials. 3) Electrical transport and p
hotocurrent measurement of 2D-materials-based devices. 4) Development of scann
ing photocurrent microscopy, ultrafast transient absorption microscopy. 5) Dev
elopment of other optical spectroscopy, particularly in a confocal microscopy
setup. In short, my research strength lies on the unprecedentedly unique spect
roscopy tool which is a combination of low temperature electrical transport me
asurement and broadband, ultrafast optical spectroscopy. By exploiting this un
ique spectroscopy tool on our novel materials preparation and device fabricati
on, not only we can gain fundamental insight of electron-photon interactions a
t reduced dimensions, we also gain the knowledge to develop novel electronic a
nd optoelectronic devices which are crucial for future applications. You can a

Founded in 1824, RPI is one of the oldest engineering schools in the U.S. (http://www.rpi.edu/about/video/index.html
). It is a small but prestigious Engineering Institute with 7 graduate program
s ranked in the top-25 among all (public and private) universities (USN&WR) an
d 6 graduate programs ranked in the top-10 among private universities (USN&WR)
. According to USNEWS 2014, CBE at RPI ranked 22th and ECSE ranked 26 among al
l universities in US and both ranked top 10 among private universities.
RPI is located in Troy, NY. It is minutes away from Albany, which is the capit
al of New York State. It is only 150 miles north of New York City, 175 miles w
est of Boston. It enjoys all the life convenience of a medium city, as well as
good connections to many Universities and National Laboratories nearby. Alba
ny is also the technology harbor along the east coast and hosts headquarters f
or many companies such as IBM, GE, Global Foundry, Samsung etc. Students will
have great exposure to academic atmosphere or industry experience, depending o
n his/her personal preference.
