A full PhD studentship at Manchester University
(Studentship No.1)
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship, which is available
immediately at the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, Manc
hester University, UK. The studentship covers both the full tuition fees (appr
oximately £15,000/per year) and the living expenses of £10,000/per year for
three years.
The student will work on a research project titled “Numerical and experimenta
l investigations of flow fields in impellers” under the direction of Dr Shan
Zhong. In this project, the student will undertake both numerical simulations
and experimental studies of impeller flows with the objective of gaining a fur
ther insight of the flow characteristics and applying passive flow control met
hodologies to improve performance. The student will join an active research te
am, which consists of three academic staff and three PhD students combining re
search expertise from aerodynamics, material sciences and manufacturing. This
work will be carried out in close collaboration with a leading industrial com
pany, offering a unique opportunity of transferring research findings into inn
ovative engineering designs.
Preference will be given to candidates who have already completed or will obta
in a Master degree by January 2014. The candidate is expected to have a resear
ch experience in turbulence modelling and an ability to conduct experiments. T
he candidate must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 88 (with no subtest score l
ower than 20) or a minimum IELST test score of 6.5 (with no subtest score lowe
r than 6).

A full PhD studentship at Manchester University
(Studentship No.2)
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship, which is available
immediately at the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, Manc

The student will work on a research project titled “Numerical investigations
of flow fields in cyclone particle separators” under the direction of Dr Shan
Zhong. In this project, the student will undertake numerical simulations of c
yclone flows using Unsteady RANS models and Large-eddy simulations. The numeri
cal results will be used to produce a further insight of the flow characterist
ics and to investigate the use of passive flow control methodologies for impro
ving performance. The student will join an active research team, which consist
s of three academic staff and three PhD students combining research expertise
from aerodynamics, material science and manufacturing. This work will be carri
ed out in close collaboration with a leading industrial company, offering a un
ique opportunity of transferring research findings into innovative engineering
designs.
Preference will be given to candidates who have already completed or will obta
in a Master degree by January 2014. An extensive research experience in CFD in
terms of turbulence modelling and/or two-phase flow is preferred. An experien
ce in large-eddy simulations will be advantageous. The candidate must achieve
a minimum TOEFL score of 88 (with no subtest score lower than 20) or a minimum
IELST test score of 6.5 (with no subtest score lower than 6).

The University of Manchester ranks 29th in the QS World University Rankings an
d 6th in Europe. It is the largest single-site university in the UK. One of th
e well known fluid dynamicists, Osborne Reynolds, made many of his ground-brea
king discoveries while he was a professor of engineering here. The city of Man
chester is the third largest city in the UK. It is a vibrant city with an easy
access via different transport means. It has many good Chinese restaurants an
d a good supply of Chinese food.
