A PhD position with financial support in the form of research assistant is imm
ediately available in the Mechanical Engineering department at the University
of Utah (the U).
This specific position is offered by the laboratory of laser-based manufacturi
ng in the department. The student is expected to work on a project of laser-ba
sed additive manufacturing. The focus of this project will be placed on (a) un
derstanding the fundamental physics of laser-powder interaction and powder beh
avior in selective laser melting processes and (b) applications of such proces
ses in manufacturing of medical devices. More information about the lab can be
found at http://tanlab.mech.utah.edu/
All applicants are encouraged to apply, background on one of the following are
as will be a plus:
+ Numerical modeling of materials processing (computational heat transfer and
fluid mechanics, computational solid mechanics, computational materials, etc.)
;
+ Experiment design and analysis of laser-based manufacturing processes;
+ Laser Optics and laser-matter interaction.
Interested applicants can contact Professor Wenda Tan (email: wenda.tan@mech.u
tah.edu) with any questions or a resume that summarizes the relevant research
experience and accomplishments.
For your information:
The ME department at the U has been experiencing a rapid growth thanks to the
continuing financial support from the Utah state government and the University
itself. In the last decade, the numbers of faculty and students have been mor
e than doubled. On the research side, the department has been increasingly act
ive, and a good reputation of the department has been growing in academia. The
department has a close relationship with the medical school of the U, which r
anked top 50 in the US. This liaison provides great opportunities for interdis
ciplinary researches on the regimes of bio-mechanics, bio-robotics, bio-design
and bio-manufacturing. Due to the fast development of its research works, a l
ot of graduate students are wanted, and plenty of funding opportunities are av
ailable within the department.
